Aspergers ... Brain / Mind ... Personal Reflections ...

There’s a nice article in the October Atlantic Magazine about Donald Triplett, the first human being diagnosed with autism. This is a well written article containing a very edifying human interest story; but most important (to me, anyway), it provides a valuable perspective on just what we do and do not know about autism. Bottom line here: we’re still not really sure just what autism is, despite all of the pontifications by the medical and psychological sciences pretending to have strict definitions and diagnostic tools. At bottom, “we know autism when we see it”.

Over the past year or so, I have ‘studied up’ on the question of Aspergers Syndrome and the dreaded “autism spectrum”. I have read articles and books, watched videos about autistic people, and have rubbed elbows with a group of young adults who identify themselves as “Aspies” or “high functioning autistics” (at a monthly Meet-Up group). Obviously I’m trying to learn more about myself, about where I fit in. Yes, I could pay a shrink a couple of thousand bucks to get a “professional diagnosis”, but I’d rather “take the journey” and save myself the grand or two.  »  continue reading …

Aspergers ... Brain / Mind ...

As I have noted previously, I share some behavioral characteristics that could be identified with Asperger Syndrome; i.e. relative difficulty and clumsiness in relating with other people. (I.e., it takes more effort for me in dealing with others, as I don’t possess natural grace; but I generally like people so I try to make the effort, nonetheless). Thus, I’ve taken an interest in this condition.

Whether I could be formally diagnosed with Aspergers hasn’t been terribly important to me, however, given that nothing can be done for an adult Aspie other than have some therapist talk you to death while simultaneously bleeding your savings to death. An occasional vacation or spending spree with the money seems to have more “supportive bang for the buck”; for me, anyway.

I just finished reading a book by Paul Churchland about the human brain and its neural network architecture (“Engine of Reason, Seat of the Soul”). This book might be the best available introduction to neural networks and how they make things happen in the brain. It’s not highly technical, but it’s not light reading either; you need to be comfortable around basic scientific and math concepts. But if you can slog your way through it (it’s a slow read), Churchland will reward you with a lot of enlightenment about the operating system of the brain, about how things work below the level of thoughts and feelings and moods and sub-conscious motives, i.e. the paradigms of ordinary psychology. He gives you the basic outline of how small webs of brain neurons (small components of the brain) respond to signals coming in from the senses, as to translate these little blips of ion charges into something having meaning to the higher decision-making parts of the brain; e.g., how they identify a particular face, or a taste, or a color, etc. based on past experience.

These higher areas themselves turn out to use the same techniques to bring together all of these sensory impressions, weaving them into an overall picture of where you are, what you are perceiving, what you think or feel, what you remember, and what you plan to do (or not do). Pretty interesting; it’s not the final blueprint for how the mind works, but it does explain what the primary building blocks are like.

Brain / Mind ... Society ...

I just started reading another book on the mysteries of the brain and mind: “How Brains Make Up Their Minds” by Walter J. Freeman (not to be confused with Walter Freeman the lobotomy doctor). I’m only about 20 pages into it, but I already came across two lines that seem too good not to share. In chapter 2, Dr. Freeman discusses the meaning of meaningfulness (that’s about the best way to sum it up!). The first quote doesn’t sound all that interesting, but when you mix it with the second quote, you get something worth pondering — sort of like nitric acid and glycerin combining to make nitroglycerin. So here we go with quote 1:

“Meaning is closed from the outside by virtue of its very uniqueness and complexity. In this sense, it resembles the immunological incompatibility of tissues . . . “

I.e., what “means something” to you won’t necessarily take root in my mind; just as my body would likely reject transplanted tissue from your body.

Given that, here’s a second quote to ponder:

“Much of the effort and energy of our lifetimes is spent in trying to understand the meanings of others and to induce others to understand our own.”

Brain / Mind ...

Memory experiment: I had a slow day at work recently, so I Googled around for a while and eventually found a video for an interesting old TV show from 1966. The show is called “The Nowhere Affair”, an episode from NBC’s “Man From U.N.C.L.E.” series, which I saw as a kid and vaguely remembered many years later because of the philosophical implications of its closing scene. (Man From UNCLE was part of the spy show craze that followed the first 007 movies in the mid-60s).

What stuck in my memory about “Nowhere Affair” was the repartee during the closing scenes between UNCLE agent Napoleon Solo (Robert Vaughn) and a woman who was somehow involved in a recent battle between UNCLE and the evil forces of THRUSH. I recalled that the plot involved a desolate town in Nevada called “Nowhere”, the site of an underground THRUSH complex . This site became a “former site” by episode’s end; Solo and his partner, agent Ilya Kuriaken (David McCallum), had of course managed to take down the place. I couldn’t remember exactly how this was done or what the woman’s role was in the process, but I did recall that she had lost her memory. (Ah! How appropriate to this test of my own memory!). I only remember seeing this episode once, when it aired during prime time in 1966; perhaps I might have seen a re-run of it in 1967, but after that I am quite sure that I never saw it again. Until now.

According to my 42 year old memory regarding this UNCLE episode, Solo and Kuryakin were sitting together somewhere after accomplishing their mission of taking THRUSH out of “Nowhere”.  »  continue reading …

Right now I’m reading a turbid book, a tough read. It’s called “The Creative Mind, Myths and Mechanisms” by British philosopher/psychologist Margaret Boden. You’d think that learning about creativity might be fun, but I’m afraid that Dr. Boden has found a rather un-creative way of discussing the topic. But I’m still plowing my way through her book (another 60 pages to go), as it does eventually get around to some interesting points about the human brain, the human mind, and the overall human condition.

I’ve also come across two articles about the mind that, together with Dr. Boden’s book, help to enlighten me about what our consciousness is about; and also why machines as we now know them cannot attain consciousness. Dr. Boden spends many words in her book describing the progress that had been made through 1990 (when her book was published) in coming up with “thinking machines”. That progress is quite astonishing. And that was before they came up with computer programs that could defeat human beings at chess (IBM’s “Deep Blue” and its progeny).

By now, the state of the art in self-learning and concept-forming computer systems must be staggering. I just saw a short article in the NY Times about a system that is used for scientific discovery, one which develops new scientific paradigms and formulas at levels of abstraction and comprehension beyond what most human brains are capable of. In effect, these machines are crunching raw data, digesting previous formulas and concepts, and coming up with new scientific theories that they then teach us! Humankind is rapidly becoming the students of these systems. (But then again, we’ve always had things to help our brain reach higher concepts, e.g. pencil and paper helps us to understand math; the “teacher” is still a creation of the student).

And yet. There’s still something about the human brain that is different from the most sophisticated thinking system. I believe that our consciousness is very much a function of what that difference is. The two articles that I mention help to elucidate that difference.

The first article is an interview with philosopher Alva Noe, who has a new book out entitled “Why You Are Not Your Brain.” So why, as Noe contends, are you NOT strictly a function of what goes on inside your head (basically, lots of neurons firing off electronically in complicated patterns)? It’s not, according to Noe, because of anything mysterious or dualistic; no ghosts in the machine or extra-dimensional / non-local interactions for him. Noe basically contends that “we are the world”. Our minds are deeply rooted in our brains, which in turn are deeply rooted in our bodies, which in turn are deeply rooted in the web of all living things, which in turn are deeply rooted in the system of planets, stars and galaxies; and all these are commonly rooted in the chemical and physical processes and substances that drive our universe.

Noe is commending us to a way of thinking about all that our brains do, including the reflective consciousness that gives us a sense of having a “self”. Science today leads us to the view that our minds are mainly neurons, neurotransmitters, ion reactions and other internal structures, along with their complex organization within the brain. Noe does not deny the importance of all of this. But he points to the extreme interconnectedness and interdependence of human life with the greater world around it. The mind and the self occupy the seat of that human life, and thus can only be explained properly in the context of the greater environment, going all the way out to the boundaries of the known universe. Again, nothing mystical here; just a better way of looking at where science is really taking is, as per Alva Noe.

So then, our brains, our minds and our consciousness are true children of the universe. The second article tells us something about the physical process behind consciousness that helps to affirm Noe’s view. In a recent set of experiments by neuroscientists in France, a group of epilepsy patients whose brains had been “hard wired” with an extensive network of electrodes (meant to control the epilepsy attacks) volunteered to allow their electrodes to be monitored while they viewed images meant to raise their level of conscious awareness. E.g., they would sit in a dark, quiet room before a blank screen, and suddenly a word would be flashed on the screen. The important finding from these observations was that almost the entire brain is involved in processing that sensory inputs that make their way to consciousness. There didn’t seem to be a particular area of the brain that ran the show, a small region that was the center of things; there was no “seat of consciousness”. Consciousness appears to be a dynamic effect based upon widely distributed events in the brain.

How does this relate to Alva Noe’s philosophy, and to Margaret Boden and her thinking machines? Well, the human brain was “designed” over millions of years via the evolutionary response of animals to a wide variety of environmental conditions. In effect, the world around us has “molded” our brains to respond to it, in its entirety (and be able to survive and reproduce in it). Human beings, being at the top of the evolutionary pyramid, have the biggest sweep of the universe. Our five senses take in a lot of information, from the action of a few molecules in the air (via smell), to the perception of starlight from across the Milky Way. OK, so we don’t perceive sound as richly as a bat does, and we don’t see what ultraviolent light reveals about the environment to a honeybee. But our rational mind, our ability to conceptualize and understand things, multiplies what we get from our senses by factors of maybe hundreds or thousands compared to bats and honeybees. Our human minds are thus connected with the quarks at the smallest level of reality, and the big bang at the heart of the overall universe. And everything in between! We can just about hear the song of the universe and smell or touch the most obscure quantum interaction.

And we do that via our consciousness. So it doesn’t surprise me that to have consciousness, our brain has to fire up just about all of its components. Those would include the components for processing sense data, the components for classifying sense data (bright light vs. dim light, round vs. square, cold vs. hot touch, nice vs. putrid smell, etc.), the components for comparing sense data with memories, and all the components for UNDERSTANDING the data. Those latter components probably take up a lot of brain space, space that always goes off regardless of whether the sense data comes from touch, smell, taste, hearing or sight (or whatever combination thereof). And they all stemmed from millions of years of “evolutionary molding” by the world around us. This is fully consistent with Alva Noe’s philosophical view that our conscious mind is better thought of as an extension of the universe as a whole, not as some unique system ensconced in a tiny little section of that universe.

Thinking next about machines that think, we can now see just how different they are from what our brains are. These thinking machines, even those that can out-think their human creators, are still mostly blind to the world, as compared to humans. They only take in what their human creators feed them, and process it for one particular problem (e.g. playing chess). They don’t face the overall problem of survival and reproduction in the world such as it is. And thus they never develop any greater, unified concepts about the world, such as it is. And thus, they are not conscious (like we are).

So, think
ing machines as we now know them are NOT conscious, despite their fantastic combinations of neural network learning circuitry and highly complex problem-solving heuristics (basically what humankind teaches them, so that they don’t have to take hundreds or thousands of years to learn like we did). Could we come up with machines that could eventually gain consciousness? Perhaps; but it would require setting them loose in our own world without our control. They would be given the impetus to survive and re-create themselves in the same world with us. There would be no off switch if they decided that we humans were in their way. It would be bad science fiction made real. I hope I don’t live to see that!

What about trying to create virtual conscious beings in a virtual world, a twist on The Matrix? You would then need a perfect computer simulation of our world and our universe; something that I believe to be inherently impossible. Perhaps some kind of consciousness COULD develop in a virtual world, but it wouldn’t be the same as our consciousness; something would be missing. About the only safe option would be a Star Trek-like experiment, far in the future, when we are shuttling about the stars and galaxies at warp speed. Perhaps we could find some little planet like ours, one with enough unused energy (high “thermodynamic potential”/low entropy) to support our consciousness-experiment machines. Ethically, we would need a planet where advanced life forms have not yet evolved. We could then drop off our thinking, reproducing machines, saying “it’s all yours, have fun; we’ll be back someday to see what happened; hopefully we can then carry on a good, soulful conversation once you have evolved into a self-conscious and socially conscious species”.

Of course, you know how THAT Star Trek episode would go. A few hundred years would go by and the experiment would be mostly forgotten. Then one day a fleet of advanced and threatening space ships shows up in our corner of the Milky Way, ready to give us grief. Yes, they are our “children” from the far off planet, and now they have warp drive technology as well as consciousness and feelings. And they’re mad at us for having abandoned them. But let me stop here, let me cool my heated brain down; I’m not a science fiction writer. Still, it’s a rather surprising and interesting pipedream, emerging as it did from such a dull, turbid book as Professor Boden’s. Perhaps she managed somehow to stimulate some creativity in my own turbid brain!

Brain / Mind ... Personal Reflections ...

Smell is a stronger form of sense than most of us realize. That’s probably because it goes way back in the chain of evolution. Before there was eyesight and hearing and taste, there were living things that could pick up chemical signals in the air. Our brains are like Microsoft Office software; they are not designed from scratch, but are “layered” from basic software designs drawn up many years ago. I.e., they still have the original programming design, but with a lot of additions and complexifications as to do more things. As such, we still have a brain that gives a lot of attention to smell.

Thus, it’s not surprising that smells can trigger dormant memories stored way in the back of the mind. I was thinking the other day about how certain kinds of smells can “take you back” to your childhood in just a second or two. You can be watching a baseball game or knuckling down on a math problem or reading an article about secularized sub-prime mortgage securities or pondering a vacation spot, and suddenly a whiff breaks your concentration; your mind wanders to far-away places from years and years ago.

So I drew up a list of some of the smells of my youth:

  • Seagrams rye whiskey (my parents and aunts and uncles always drank it during the holidays, mixed with ginger ale)
  • Balsam (from a Christmas tree in the living room)
  • Clove oil (from the dentist’s office)
  • Tar (the city was re-paving the local streets; and also from the Flintkote roofing-paper factory up the road)
  • Creosote (Railroad track ties — every male child ‘walked the tracks’ back then)
  • Perfumy flowers (funeral parlors and the local Catholic church at Easter time; for that, add the weird, resiny smell of beeswax candles burning)
  • Baseball glove leather and neatsfoot oil (ah, boyhood summer days)
  • Salt water (at the beach)
  • Yeast (pizza shops — back when they made their own dough)
  • Sweet baking smells (the local bakeries — we had two in my neighborhood)
  • Polished wood floors (the school gym)
  • An odd, somewhat rancid damp smell (wet raincoats and galoshes stored in the school classroom closet on a rainy day)
  • Burning tree leaves (in October and November, back when everyone burned autumn leaves)
  • “Beerwood” (the smell in an old bar or restaurant where everything was wood, and was marinated in spilled beer)

Many of these smells are mostly gone, because times have changed (e.g., pizza places now buy pre-made dough; dentists don’t use clove oil anymore for pain relief; you can’t burn leaves in autumn; and most Christmas trees sold are not balsam firs, or were cut months ago and have lost their smell by late December). It just shows that I’m getting old. But it’s still nice when an occasional smell takes me back for a quick mental visit with my youth, the days of long ago.

Brain / Mind ... Personal Reflections ...

My mother has been in the intensive care unit at St. Marys Hospital in Passaic for the past 18 days, following an unexpected respiratory arrest that brought both her lungs and heart to a halt. Thus, I’ve gotten to know something about hospital life; there’s nothing like hanging around an ICU for 6 hours each day (following a few hours in the emergency room at the start) to get a feel for things.

I must say that I’ve been impressed with many of the people working there. I’m still not a big fan of doctors, but the emergency room MD was pretty amazing in his low-key fashion. He was dancing his way through a non-stop chorus of chaos, making it all look well-rehearsed. The ER med tech guy who helped him was an amazingly intense young man. And most of the ICU nurses and technicians have done pretty well too.

I’ve been going back to my office for half-days during this time, and many of the people there are minor-league by comparison. The combination of human caring and professional intensity is entirely lacking amidst much of the support staff. Myself included, unfortunately.

I probably am romanticizing the hospital situation somewhat; there are problems and pettiness and employee gripes at St. Marys. It’s hard and sometimes nasty work, but when these folk go home they certainly are entitled to feel good about what they do for a living.

Next thought: since her respiratory incident, my mother has been in something of a coma, to a varying degree. She does open her eyes a fair amount, and sometimes seems quite aware of what is going on around her. But most of the time, she is not experiencing what we call “consciousness”. This is ironic to me, given the academic interest that I’ve taken on the topic of mind and self-awareness. I’ve read quite a few books and have devoted part of this web site to reviewing what I’ve learned from scientists, psychologists and philosophers about the complex interactions between brain, mind and self (and let’s not even get into stuff like “free will”). But I didn’t imagine that my own mother would soon be caught in the twilight world where those around her can only guess “what it is like” for her right now.

All of those good words and learned thoughts by the experts, professing to have a grasp on what our minds are and what goes on within them . . . You’d think I’d be well prepared to understand what my mother is going through. But no. When something really happens to the brain and mind of a real person, all of the learned thoughts and conceptual paradigms about our innermost life are “like straw” (as St. Thomas Aquinas said late in his life about the many words he had written trying to capture the essence of God).

Right now I’m plowing my way through a little-noticed book about the greater implications of quantum physics for science in general, especially for biology, psychology, and the ultimate question about “the nature of the mind”, i.e. what is “consciousness”. (Oh yea, the book is called “The Non-Local Universe” by Robert Nadeau and Menas Kafatos). This book really wasn’t written all that well, although it does have an occasional chapter full of interesting insights. But it did inspire me to do some thinking on my own. And one of the thoughts that I had while somewhere in the middle of this could-have-been-great book refers to the question of whether we will ever truly understand consciousness.

A lot of modern brain scientists, psychologists and philosophers say that we will. Some even think that we already do (e.g., Daniel Dennett). They compare the problem of how a physical brain uses a mix of chemical and electronic signals to create the vivid mix of experience, feeling and thought that comprise our conscious lives, with past issues that seemed similarly profound and mysterious, but ultimately yielded to scientific reduction. E.g., the problem of life, the problem of heat, the problem of oxidation and combustion, the problem of a media for light waves, etc. In all of these cases, some very smart people concluded that there’s something fundamentally different and unknown about the universe involved in the phenomenon. But they turned out to be wrong. Today, there are some very smart people (and also some so-so people like myself) who think that consciousness hints at an otherwise unknown feature of the universe. However, they/we are in the minority.

The list of seemingly ontological mysteries that eventually yielded to science as we know it is quite impressive. But what the “inevitable solution” promoters (e.g., philosopher Patricia Churchland) don’t tell you is that within the past 100 years or so, there have been at least two major empirical and logical puzzles that did NOT yield to scientific determinism. In both instances, scientists and mathematicians and philosophers had to eventually pull out the white flag, had to admit that we face a borderline of knowledge which we just cannot cross. Those two areas were 1.) the seeking of a complete logical foundation for mathematical methods and formulas, and 2.) the understanding and predictability of matter and energy reactions on the micro-level, i.e. in the quantum world. With regard to the first problem, Bertrand Russell’s “set of sets” rationale bent the proposed logical framework of math into a pretzel of contradictions. Godel did pretty much the same thing with his self-referential proposition analysis. There’s something about our ability to explain things that we ultimately just can’t explain!

With regard to the second area, i.e. quantum indeterminacy, Heisenberg showed that even with the best measuring devices, even with hypothetically perfect measuring devices, we could never know with absolute certainty both the energy level (momentum) and position in space and time of a quantum particle (e.g., an electron or photon). There are other information couplets for which this limitation would also apply. In our macro-world, we can say that an automobile will be exactly at such-and-such location at a particular moment in time, that it weights so many pounds, that it is going so fast, and thus how much kinetic energy (momentum) it has. So we can know its position and energy precisely at the same instant. Good old Newtonian physics insures that we can. But on the quantum level . . . something changes. And those changes involve information barriers, know-ability barriers, epistemological barriers.

Consciousness is NOT a quantum world phenomenon, and is not a logic foundation problem as with math. It seemingly exists on the level of macro-reality that we best perceive. And yet it IS that perception, and not the “macro-reality” that we perceive. So, as with the issue of logical math foundations, it does run into a self-referential problem. Not a good sign. As to the information uncertainty that divides macro-world and micro-world knowledge, there is a question of what information can be had when you cross “emergence” borderlines. I.e., the macro-world that we know so well is a phenomenal “emergence” from gadzillions of interacting events on the quantum level, the swirl of electrons and quarks and photons and other, more exotic bosons and mesons (maybe even gravitons!).

An emergent phenomenon takes on seemingly unique characteristics, characteristics that are not apparent in the many little things that make it up. This is similar to the way that a traffic jam takes on a life of its own apart from the many autos and drivers and roadways involved. When we observe the micro-world using tools from the macro-world (which is the world that emerges from the micro), we can’t get the same complete information as when we stay in the macro-world. Consciousness is recognized as an emergence, emerging from many things happening and interacting in the macro-world (especially in the brain, but ultimately across the whole ecology of living things).

Perhaps when using macro-world tools to cross the emergence borderline into consciousness, once again, there is a limit to what knowledge can be brought back into macro-land. And likewise, what we perceive here in consciousness-land is not the complete story of what goes on in the macro-world, and also in the micro-world for that matter. Immanuel Kant among others made this point in discussing the “noumenal realm” versus the “phenomenal realm”, i.e. the true and complete nature of reality beyond the pure intuitions of time, space and being that allow us to get on with our phenomenon-based lives.

So — perhaps consciousness, just like the dance of the quanta, will remain forever partly shielded from what we can know of it via “macro world”. I.e., via science. But hey — we still know it directly, at least while we’re alive and not sleeping or under anesthesia. I mean — maybe the ultimate lesson will be to stop trying to figure it out and control it as with combustion and nuclear energy (look what wonderful things humankind did for itself with those discoveries: global warming and H-bombs). Just enjoy it while you can, celebrate it, be grateful for it, allow other beings possessing it to experience and enjoy it as much as possible. If science and philosophy ultimately reach such a conclusion and promote it in their rigorous textbooks, they would teach humankind something truly wise and precious. Something so sorely needed in this age of so little faith.

Every so many years I start thinking anew about Robert Pirsig, the author of “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”. I’ve written about him and his ideas before on this blog; I even mentioned the short letter that I received from Mr. Pirsig in response to my own letter to him. “Zen and the Art” was a big phenomenon in the late 70’s. I finally read it in ’82, and I was really moved by it. It seemed to me and to millions of others like a life-changing book, the kind of book you’re lucky to come across every 20 years or so. (Caveat: Pirsig might well have Asperger’s Syndrome, and I probably have a lite version of it myself. As such, “Zen and the Art” is an Aspie-tinted view of the world, which may help explain why I found it so moving.)

But Pirsig turned out to be a “one-hit wonder”. He wrote another book, Lila, which has mostly been forgotten; and mercifully so. Pirsig tried to contain the power that he somehow mustered in “Zen and the Art” within a body of written philosophy, his “Method of Quality” or MOQ; but he couldn’t do it. There are still a lot of people on the web discussing MOQ, even though the academic philosophical institutions never accepted it. I tried to get interested in MOQ and in the discussion community gathered around it, but I couldn’t maintain my enthusiasm. And yet, the experience of “Zen and the Art” still haunts me from time to time, and I’m in one of those haunted phases right now. A little, anyway; the echos fade as the years go by.

Anyway, over the past few years I’ve become highly interested in “philosophy of mind” and its various issues, especially the connection between human consciousness, i.e. our experiences and feelings, and the physical workings of the brain. How does the equivalent of a slab of meat with a lot of tiny electrical connections within it create a subjective world of love, hate, greed, nobility, faith, despair, hope, beauty, joy, etc.? One of the key concepts in mental philosophy is “qualia”, the conceptual “unit” of mental experience. I, along with a lot of true philosophers, have been pondering the question of what qualia might be (if it really is anything at all). In one of my recent ponderings, I recalled how Pirsig was so mesmerized by the concept of “quality”. Quality, qualia . . . could there be a connection? Was Pirsig saying something profound about the nature of our minds, about the mystery of the mind-brain relationship?

Actually, he wasn’t. In fact, it may be the other way around. The whole mind-brain problem might be saying something about the mystery of Pirsig and his religious devotion to a metaphysical concept that he calls “quality”. Pirsig’s “MOQ” is very interesting and provides a lot of interesting insights and alternate ways of considering various and sundry issues. But in the end it isn’t really a consistent philosophy. It’s an odd assemblage of notions that have attracted Robert Pirsig’s interest over the past 80 some-odd years of his life. MOQ can probably tell us something about almost anything; e.g. what is the rationale for the making of laws, when does human life begin, what is free will, should the rich assume a greater share of the tax burden, etc. But it really can’t get to the true nature of any of those issues. In a way, it’s an attempt to do what Martin Heidegger did with the concept of “being”, i.e. Dasein. Heidegger wrote a very broad philosophy around the idea of “being”, and is recognized as one of the major philosophers of the 20th Century. Pirsig obviously wanted to go that route.

I think that “being” is ultimately the key to human consciousness, the “om” of the universe. It is THE THING which adds an existential dimension to our sense perceptions and makes us “feel alive”. Heidegger ultimately went off the rails in his attempt to “bottle” the concept of “being”. That’s apparent by his support for national socialism in Germany, well after its dark intentions regarding the Jewish population became apparent in the mid 1930s. Pirsig’s MOQ is much more innocent, much less political, but ultimately no more powerful than Heideggerism. But like Heidegger, Pirsig was trying to capture the consciousness butterfly; and fell off the ledge in doing so. He finally did capture something, but it wasn’t the shocking power that he named “quality”. Just as Heidegger, in his books and articles, and in the life that he lived finally captured something much less pure than whatever first inspired him to chase the concept of “being”.

Not that I’m doing any better than either of them in capturing that which gives our lives its pizzazz or quality or “being” or vividness or whatever you want to call it. It may well be a hopeless quest; but it is fun. So, fool that I am, I won’t stop trying. I may not write a memorable book, and hopefully I won’t support a repugnant cause. But if nothing else, the quest for . . . . whatever you want to call it . . . makes life more interesting!
