Outer Space ... Science ...

The Space Shuttles are making their last flights and will soon be safely stuffed and mounted for all to see in museums. Many people look back at them with disappointment. They turned out to be a good bit more expensive, unsafe, and difficult to use than advertised. Most of the experts agree that America’s future in manned spaceflight, if and when there is such a future, will not utilize the airplane-like “space truck” design of the Shuttle. Although the Orion successor program was recently halted, it boldly went back to past designs, i.e. Apollo-like capsules on top of tall rockets. The Russians also experimented with something like the Shuttle, but took a pass and stuck with their old-fashioned Soyuz capsule (which is now the only way to get a human being into space and back).

But I wonder if some of the disdain for the Shuttle is over-reaction. Yes, the Shuttle was not designed for deep spaceflight, it couldn’t go to the moon or to an asteroid, nor could it form the keystone for an eventual Mars mission. But it was a pretty useful tool when it worked; it allowed Americans to place and repair important satellites (including the Hubble telescope), was a mobile space science lab, and made a pretty good delivery and assembly vehicle for the International Space Station. Had it worked better it may well have had important military applications, such as inspecting suspicious space vehicles sent up by not-so-friendly humans. We are probably going to miss it.

So let’s pretend that the USA was still flush with cash, and not tipping on the edge of insolvency. Let’s pretend that we are with NASA, to which Congress has given a blank check  »  continue reading …

Outer Space ... Spirituality ...

Being a born geek and having grown up in the days of the “space race” in the 1960s, I just had to watch the local PBS station’s recent replay of “The NASA Story: America in Space”, a 2009 BBC production. During the second episode, which was about the moon landings, Apollo flight director Gene Kranz spoke of what it was like at Mission Control during one of the “moon missions”. He recalls telling his people, all those intense geeky fellows with the horn-rimmed glasses, short-sleeved white shirts and black ties, that this is what they were born for; these are the peak moments of their lives. (He also told them in a father-like way that he would support all of their decisions.) When you walked thru the door into the control room and saw all of them at their control panels, hunched over flickering screens and pouring over binders holding charts and instructions, Kranz said that you could feel the atmosphere “crackling with energy”.

This is how Kranz helped pull off NASA’s and America’s greatest techno-miracles. It’s sad how the “Zen of Kranz” was lost somehow during the Space Shuttle days (Challenger, Columbia . . . and now, the end of American manned space flight).

As a Zen practitioner, I think that Mr. Kranz pretty aptly described what we seek in Zen. If you were to walk into a zendo during a meditation session, it would seem pretty still, almost like a morgue. But if the practitioners are truly doing what Zen is about, there should be a “crackling” of energy in their midst. At Mission Control, Kranz and his troop of techies were entirely focused; no day-dreaming, no angst, no idle chit-chat. Everyone was at the top of their game, playing it to the hilt. Another example might be a musician playing in the New York Philharmonic. She or he melts into the concert, she becomes the music; it takes her over, sweeps her normal day-to-day worries or amusements off the table. Another example? How about a figure skating team at the Olympics? Again, they become the skating; they are totally alive in it, and it in them.

History ... Outer Space ... Personal Reflections ...

There was a BBC show the other nite on the local PBS channel about the early days of the American manned spaceflight program. I.e., the Mercury and Gemini programs. It made me nostalgic for those days, the 1960s, when the USA established its presence in space and proved it was ready to go to the moon. I was growing up in the suburbs, and my father worked for an aerospace company that provided some pieces of the guidance systems for those rockets. Watching those launches on TV, hosted as always by the unsinkable Walter Cronkite, was always a thrill. America just seemed back then like a place that did things right and got the job done.

Versus today. Ah, what happened? What changed? Well, perhaps it is as much a case of me changing as well as America. There are hundreds of reasons, many of them good reasons, to lament the decline of our nation in recent years. I have discussed some of these things here from time to time. But it occurred to me that perhaps America is still doing some great things, despite all the not so great things going on in and around it.

Outer Space ...

I caught up recently with NASA’s latest big thing, the James Webb Space Telescope. There’s a good article about it in the October Scientific American. In a way it replaces the Hubble, and in a way it’s different. The Webb is built to observe a broad range of infrared light coming from distant reaches of the universe, whereas Hubble focused on the visible spectrum, with a bit of range into the ultraviolet and infrared zones.

Also, the Webb is more of a “deep space” mission; whereas the Hubble orbited at around 380 miles from Earth, the Webb will find its way to a “gravity point” about a million miles from Earth, on the far side away from the Sun (towards Mars). It is a good bit more sensitive than the Hubble, partly for being bigger, and partly for being so far away from Earth (which radiates a lot of energy and fuzzes up the really faint signals from space). It won’t deliver those fantastic pictures as Hubble did, but it will return a lot of data maps that will help answer a lot of questions about what went on in the first 200 million years after the Big Bang. It will also help to find other planets of distant stars that might support life.

Outer Space ... Science ...

As a fan of cutting-edge physics and cosmology, I look out for quirky little discoveries and speculations by scientists as to what these quirky discoveries MIGHT mean. Most of them turn out not to mean much, but once in a blue moon some odd little thing signals the eventual overthrow of a whole way of looking at – well, looking at the Universe! E.g., back in the mid-19th Century, astronomers knew that something was a bit off with their observations of Mercury. They were still using Newtonian physics, whereby they needed the more sophisticated Einsteinian relativity theories to predict what light and gravity would do on larger scales like solar systems. And those theories eventually came along, and changed the Newtonian world of absolute coordinates and timeframes into the relativistic worldview that Einstein requires.

So, I couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow after reading an article about the non-dilation of time in recent quasar observations. Time dilation is the crazy effect of clocks going slower on a system moving at very high speeds (perhaps close to light-speed) relative to the system where the observations are being made. E.g., the example given in many physics books regards twin brothers, one who stays on earth all his life and the other who blasts off in a super-rocket at age 20, loops around the Milky Way at near-light speed, then returns to earth 50 years later. The earth brother is now aged 70; the rocket man brother was subject to time dilation, and thus might only be 10 years older (this varies, depending on just how fast that rocket was cruising); he really does still have the body of a 30 year old!

Outer Space ... Public Policy ...

There’s a lot of buzz amidst the aerospace crowd these days about the X37B, a new satellite system being developed by the US Air Force. The Air Force has been involved in plenty of different military satellites, so what makes the X37B so new and different? Well, actually, it’s that the X37B is NOT so new and different; when you see it, the first thing you say is that ‘I’ve seen this before’. Basically, the X37B looks like a smaller, non-piloted version of the Space Shuttle. Although it is launched a bit differently than the Shuttle was, it will glide back to earth after its mission and land on an airplane runway, and then be re-used, just like the Shuttle.

Many space program analysts regard the Space Shuttle as a failure in both engineering design and in economic realities. It was supposed to make traveling into low earth orbit with humans and cargo both safer and cheaper than the old Apollo, Gemini and Mercury capsules, which were all one-use only. The Shuttle supposedly made more sense by being re-usable. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out to be either safer or cheaper. The Russian space program tried out a shuttle-like ship, but decided to stick with its tried-and-true Soyuz capsule. And the American manned space program has now turned back to the old capsule on top of booster rocket design (even though NASA’s Ares-Orion rocket program has been canceled, its possible replacement for low earth orbit missions, the commercial Dragon / Falcon rocket from SpaceX, is also a classic capsule and booster). So why is the Air Force messing around with an (assumedly) unmanned mini-Shuttle?

Outer Space ... Spirituality ...

Two interesting quotes: I just came across two interesting quotes regarding personal spirituality. The first one was in a NY Times article about physicist / astronaut John Grunsfeld, who is going up on the Space Shuttle next month on the last repair mission for the Hubble Space Telescope. Grunsfeld has been on four previous Shuttle flights to the Hubble Telescope, and he played a key role in reversing NASA’s previous decision not to go back to the Hubble. (That thing is what they call “high maintenance”, even though it has returned a lot of good scientific data.) This last mission will give it a few more good years, although it involves some danger given that two satellites crashed into each other a few months ago and the resulting space junk is whirling around in the vicinity of the Hubble.

Obviously, Mr. Grunsfeld’s spirituality is centered heavily around science (and so is mine, to a certain degree). As with many other science people, the God-centered religions such as Christianity, Judiasm and Islam didn’t interest Grunsfeld; but Buddhism held some attraction. Earlier in his life, before pursuing his PhD, Grunsfeld got a job in Japan working with an X-ray researcher at the University of Tokyo. At the same time he lived in a Zen monastery, participating in the meditation life of the community. Wow, sounds great! But according to the article, Grunsfeld came home early one day and found the monks playing baseball. For him, the “spell was broken”; he left the Zen life and went back to the USA to earn his doctorate in physics and to fully immerse himself in science.

Zen monks playing baseball — what was so wrong with that? For Grunsfeld, it was obviously like coming home early to find your husband or wife in bed with someone else. This guy obviously has high standards. Hopefully, the baseball monks prepared him for what he would later experience with NASA, which people used to see as a paradigm of science and technology. In reality, NASA is now just another swamp of federal politics and big business contracts. He obviously stuck with the Shuttle program, despite the two fatal failures it experienced when its managers were swayed from pure scientific thinking by political and financial concerns. He’s still willing to put his life on the line for NASA, despite the imperfections. He’s obviously older and wiser now.

Zen masters are known to teach their young followers with brutal slaps in the face. The baseball game was the reality slap that they gave to Grunsfeld. He seems to have learned the lesson well, as he’s still doing good things with NASA in spite of all the corruption involved. I hope that Dr. Grunsfeld has a good mission and manages to keep the Hubble up there observing the heavens for a few more years.

The second quote was in the April 2009 edition of “Friends of Silence”, a very nice letter that comes out every month or so, filled with thoughts and quotes centered around a spiritual theme. The April theme focused on Spring and Nature, not surprisingly. In the introduction paragraphs, publisher Nan Merrill sings the praises of Nature’s beauty, but also ponders the fact that Nature isn’t always very kind with us. Quote: “She [Nature] weeps with those who bear the brunt of Her inevitable storms and droughts that are but terrible wake-up calls to every one of us”.

I found that apologetic interpretation of nature’s brutality to be just a bit over-the-top. The next time I’m stuck out in the freezing cold and dark of winter, I don’t think it would help much to know that Mother Nature regrets my discomforts and inconvenience. And as to the real suffering, e.g. hurricanes that reek havoc as in New Orleans, tidal waves that kill thousands, cruel diseases that waste millions of lives — does it help the victims to imagine that Nature weeps because of this? And that it is somehow a “wake up call”, implying that disasters are all somehow the fault of humankind?

Let’s keep it real here. I think Lord Tennyson had Nature’s number when he said, in his famous poem “In Memorium”:

Man, her last work, who seemed so fair
Who trusted God was love indeed
Tho’ Nature, red in tooth and claw
With raving, shriek’d against his creed

The natural world is a lovely thing, and humankind needs to deeply consider its ways and its wisdoms. We all depend upon it for survival, and so a cooperative attitude is much better than the exploitive approaches that are used so often here in the industrialized western world (and increasingly in the eastern world too). But at some point, we humans need to depart from the “natural world”. At some point we need to question it, to challenge it, to seperate ourselves from it, to do better than it. As people such as John Grunsfeld have done. That’s the human legacy.

Current Affairs ... Outer Space ...

I got a laugh today reading about the NASA astronauts who might have been launched into the heavens after a night of heavy drinking. Supposedly one of these cases involves an American going up in a Russian Soyez capsule to the Space Station. Well hey, you can’t really count that one. He was probably just trying to keep up with his Russian comrads. The Russians probably wouldn’t launch a guy who couldn’t hold his vodka. As to the American Space Shuttle flights, well — remember that the Shuttle holds 7 or 8 astronauts, and most of them don’t do anything during the launch anyway. The thing is so automated that even the pilot pretty much just watches. Therefore, it probably wasn’t such a big deal, so long as the other crew members kept the guy from touching the wrong switch before he would dry out and get over his hangover. Yes, if there was an accident he’d have less chance of getting out alive. But I gather that most Shuttle accidents are fatal. In all of its flights, we still haven’t seen an Apollo 13 situation where something went bad but a lot of struggle and effort eventually brought the ship home safely.

Well, now that the truth has become public, NASA will have to crack down; the age of “the Right Stuff” will finally be over. According to Tom Wolfe’s book, the true Right Stuff brothers were the rocket plane test pilots of the 1950s, who would stay out until 1 am sloshing down the hard stuff, then be up at 6 in a silvery fire suit, ready to be stuffed into a little winged thermos bottle full of liquid oxygen and other highly explosive stuff. They’d take him and his steed up into the sky attached to the belly of an old bomber plane, then drop him over the desert. He’d hit the switch to fire the rocket engines and then grab the steering stick and try his darndest to keep the little shooting star from flipping over and hurling him into the ground below, to perish in a ball of flame. If luck was with him, he’d be landing the thing in a few minutes with another mighty, heroic tale to tell. If not, his picture would go on the next available slot in the dead test pilot’s hall of fame.

I suspect that the Space Shuttle guys who had downed the better part of a bottle on the night before launch were trying to re-imagine those days. But obviously they couldn’t. After the sun came up, they were surrounded by a cocoon of computers that would make all the decisions and would determine their fate. The glory of the old days can never be re-lived. But we keep on trying until it’s all shown to be just as silly as it really is. That’s what I see happening in this little NASA tiff about the lack of bureaucratic discipline on the launch site. The bureaucrats have won, as they always must. Enjoy your excitement while you may, for the season of folly is brief.

Economics/Business ... Outer Space ...

Jeff Bezos is famous as the Amazon.com venture capitalist, the guy who made billions off a good e-commerce web site. Jeff is now taking another big bet on, regarding the space race. A lot of venture capital is now going into space launch services. The government monopoly on the launching of commercial satellites has already been broken, and more and more people are putting real money on the line in order to become the WalMart of earth orbit and beyond. An offshoot of all this is space tourism, the anticipated development of a relatively safe rocket that could take ordinary people up maybe 60 or 70 miles (like the original Mercury space shots in the early 1960s), for a view from the edge of space. Actually, these ordinary people would not be entirely ordinary; they’d have to have a lot of money to afford the ticket for such a thrill ride. But the capitalists obviously see a market and smell an opportunity to get rich.

Jeff’s venture is called Blue Origin, and is aimed primarily at the sub-orbital space tourism market. He’s putting his money on the Delta Clipper rocket, which was designed and tested by the US military under the Star Wars initiative in the 1980s (the space-based missile defense system that President Reagan dreamed of). The Clipper, known as the DC-X during the tests, looks like a huge nose cone with some struts at the bottom. The Star Wars folk hoped it would turn out to be a good design for a cheap, quickly re-usable “single stage to orbit” rocket, something that could ferry a canister of supplies into orbit, then come back down, land, and be re-launched within a day or two.

Unfortunately, the basic physics and chemistry of rocketry worked against the Delta Clipper concept. Given all of the weight factors, the Clipper couldn’t take very much into orbit; it turned out to be more expensive than the regular old multi-stage, throw-away rockets. That’s what NASA and our military has returned to, after several decades of trying to get the Space Shuttle concept of re-usability to work. The Constellation project to return human beings to the Moon and eventually go to Mars is going to use regular old rockets and manned capsules just like the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo rockets of the 1960s. These will mostly be advanced versions of the Delta and Atlas designs used today, which were originally designed to lob H-bombs at Russia in the 1950s.

But hey — just because concepts like the Shuttle and the Clipper didn’t work as cost-effective ways to get stuff and people up into earth orbit, that doesn’t mean that they’re worthless. The “magic of the market” is back, taking government-reject science and finding a niche where it might still be useful. I have a lot of socialism in my blood, but sometimes I tip my hat to capitalism. The idiots who drool to get rich do, in fact, help society in some instances, despite their mindless greed. Maybe the sub-orbital joy-ride purveyors will find an engineering tweek or two that will eventually make a Shuttle or Clipper-like rocket work as a low-cost orbital ferry. So, one cheer for Jeff Bezos and capitalism.

But remember — capitalism has also left us with assorted goodies like broken-down urban centers rife with poverty, murder and drugs; industrial workplaces that sometimes maim and kill their workers; gated communities for the rich; workers with promising career tracks being relegated to the unemployment line because of foreign outsourcing; and global warming. As a social system, capitalism lavishly rewards the winners and tolerates a lot of lackeys (i.e., the American and European middle class); but it really treats the losers quite badly. And when they turn to religious fanaticism and violence, capitalism has no better answer than high-tech homeland security. Such security has made air travel the joyful experience that it now is.

As the ancient wise men (like Aristotle) had said for eons, this world needs a balance of rugged individualism and collectivism. Socialism and capitalism form an antagonistic but necessary yin and yang. Ever since the election of President Ronald Reagan back in 1980, America has been feeding its capitalism/individualism side and starving its socialism/collectivism side. And we’re starting to really feel the effects of things being out of kilter.

I believe that our successful capitalists should start speaking up for the shrinking socialist / collectivist side of our economy and society. Jeff Bezos, for instance. He made his billions on the Internet, but if government hadn’t laid the engineering groundwork for digital packet-switching networks in the 1960s, there wouldn’t have been an Internet to get rich off of. It was government that helped build the railroads, that dug the canals, that laid down the Interstate Highway system and the airports that our economy now depends on. It was our government that got us into space, that came up with the rocket designs that people like Mr. Bezos now hope to exploit for money-making upper-atmospheric joy rides. The radical capitalists want to kill the governmental goose that lays the eggs — eggs that people like them later turn into gold. That all seems a bit short-sighted.

Unfortunately, capitalists are not known for taking the long-term view. But they really should, or else the bearded outcasts may eventually take to the streets once more. Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, please tell me that there’s a better choice than the one between Lenin, Robbespierre, and Chairman Mao versus Carnegie, Vanderbilt and Krupp. Or between Hitler and Howard Dean. Where is wisdom, where is balance? Is it available on Amazon?

Outer Space ... Society ...

Follow-Up: I did a web search on Doctor Joy Shaffer, the author of the interesting article on the future of space exploration that I reviewed in my last entry. It appears that she runs a medical practice that specializes in cross dressers and transexuals, offering services such as body hair removal, fat injections and hormone therapy (actually, she is formerly a he herself). She’s based in California, of course. Talk about boldly going where no one else has gone! Are there many astronauts in drag out there? Perhaps David Bowie’s Major Tom?

Sorry, I couldn’t resist the snicker. I realize that Dr. Shaffer provides professional medical services to people with “transgender” issues. But geez, what an eclectic set of interests – space technology and transexuality.

And then again, that’s the trend here in modern America. Because of education and television with a zillion channels and big bookstores and the internet, people today have a million different things that they can get interested in. It’s like a great big smorgasbord, where everyone takes a different combination of foods to make a meal.

Almost no one these days has the same set of interests. If you’re taken by Amish quilts and do some quilting yourself, there’s no reason that you can’t also be a big fan of Latin dancing or college hockey. The average slob that you see watching an NFL game while drinking a beer may also be an expert on the construction of the Pyramids. Someone big into NASCAR racing and tennis may also be interested in forest mushrooms. A person who has voluntarily studied the history of Christian monasticism and the anti-poverty movement in America may also be interested in railroads and collecting stamps (hey, sounds like me!).

So what the heck. To paraphrase the old Chinese curse, “may you live in eclectic times”.
