We’ve been having one of those winters here in New Jersey. Lots of cold, snow, wind and ice, much more than we usually get. (With all due sympathy for those of you up north and in the mid-west, who are getting it worse; and also to those in the south who had just a brief taste, but weren’t ready at all for it). Last week we had 8 inches of snow, then three days later another 4 inches with a freezing rainstorm on top of it, followed by a 15 degree cold wave. So here are 9 pics taken on my way to work this past Thursday, the day after the freezing rain. This is truly Newark in winter time.

First, a half-hearted, uninspired dawn at the train station.

Next, some razor barb wire, a cheery way to greet the new day.

And after that, long stretches of slippery, icy sidewalk to contend with on my hike to the office.

Someone is getting ready to start shoveling the cars out from the frozen snow. Or should they just wait until April?

Some impromptu snow-sculptures to enhance the Newark street-scape.

The eternal grease trucks arrive extra-early to stake out their spots.

A hardy breed of people get off the bus and brave the cold on the way to their jobs or appointments (or court appearances) in the government square.

Ah yes, residential parking on the side streets. You know it’s winter when you see those little walls of lovely gray snow-ice that surround the parking space in front of everyone’s house. (Actually these final shots were taken on my way home).

And when you get in your car and leave for work or for the store, don’t forget to put a garbage can or road cone or plastic chair out to make sure that no one else comes and grabs your spot while you’re gone.

Hope you’ve enjoyed this little taste of urban winter splendor. Hard to believe that in another 6 weeks it will be spring, and this will all be just a bad dream.

  1. Jim, These pix looks so much like the Midwest, they might as well be the Midwest.

I’m so sick of winter, I am beginning to wonder if I’ve turned into a wuss. We’ve had so many days of below zero at night, most particularly, that I find myself wondering what kind of wuss I am. I read a comment today where a woman in Wyoming was ecstatic when the temp went up 50 degrees–from 25 below to 25 above. And how right she was; it might have felt like spring.

Just have to get used to it and live through it. It’s been worse–at least here. MCS

  2. Jim, Another thing I’ve noticed that should make one feel better in this winter: The sun is warmer during on the days it manages to show up. Another big plus for February! MCS

  4. Thank much, Steve. I’m definitely NOT one of the greats, but it does takes some “photographer fortitude” to get a camera out and fire pictures off in that weather!!!
