I called him “Hurricane Perry”, given the force and bluster by which he came on. I said that Perry seems to have a real chance to do to Romney and the GOP this year what Barack Obama did back in 2007-2008 to Hilary Clinton and the Demorcrats.

It turns out that I was prophetic about Perry, but only in the ultimately prophetic sense. At bottom I was wrong; Rick Perry was not the man to upset the Republican apple cart. But consider the metaphor that I used — Perry like a hurricane. It seemed right at the time. And looking back, it seems even righter.

A hurricane is a temperature and moisture disturbance in the atmosphere that starts out in the Atlantic over equatorial waters, gains its own life as a cyclone of wind and precipitation, starts traveling to the north and west, can cause a lot of havoc if and when it reaches populated land, and eventually peters out and disappears somewhere in the far north, approaching the Arctic Circle. The start to finish time on this little melodrama can vary, but the big ones end in about 2 or 3 weeks.

Perry’s rise and fall took place in just about that time frame. OK, a little bit more, but not by much. So, Rick Perry was indeed like a hurricane; as with all hurricanes, his damage and havoc was temporary, he soon blew over.

And ditto for the next ultra-conservative heart-throb, Herman Cain. Of course, when looking at Mr. Cain in the context of a hurricane, one cannot but be tempted to relate the end syllable with the last name. It turns out that Mr. Cain’s campaign also tried this (in addition to that movie-based twist on the sound of his first name, i.e. “The Herminator”). E.g., here is the Facebook page for “The Herman Cain Hurricane Train“.

Yikes . . . Cain-Cane-Train. A bit too much.
