{"id":395,"date":"2007-02-07T21:08:00","date_gmt":"2007-02-07T21:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jimgworld.com\/blog1\/2007\/02\/07\/395\/"},"modified":"2007-02-07T21:08:00","modified_gmt":"2007-02-07T21:08:00","slug":"395","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jimgworld.com\/blog1\/?p=395","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The failure of the US Senate to even consider a proposed bipartisan resolution opposing a troop buildup in Iraq (Levin-Warner) reminds me of an old song.  That song is <span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">\u201cEve of Destruction\u201d<\/span>, written by P. Sloan and made famous by Barry McGuire in 1965.  The lines that I\u2019m thinking of go like this:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t twist the truth, it knows no regulation<br \/>A handful of Senators don\u2019t pass legislation\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That old mock-Dylan protest song is more than 40 years old now, and some of the lines are badly out of date (e.g., Red China isn\u2019t so red anymore and isn\u2019t a bastion of hate, any more than any other nation; 18 year olds now have the vote; Selma, Alabama isn\u2019t any worse on racial issues than the rest of the nation; the \u201cnuclear button\u201d that would start a cataclysmic war between Russia and the USA isn\u2019t likely to be pushed anymore; astronauts stay up in the space station for four months now, versus four days; etc.).  But the general themes of that song remain current, quite unfortunately.  It\u2019s still a scary world, and even though the \u201ceve of destruction\u201d hasn\u2019t turned into the night of anarchy and terror, we\u2019re still not much better off than in the mid-60s.  <\/p>\n<p>P.S.: you could easily update the line in that song about China and Selma as follows: \u201cImagine all the hate there is in Al Qaeda; then take a look around to Laramie, Wyoming\u201d (where Matthew Shepard was beaten to death).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The failure of the US Senate to even consider a proposed bipartisan resolution opposing a troop buildup in Iraq (Levin-Warner) reminds me of an old song.
