Brain / Mind ... Science ...

I finally started digging into “Godel, Escher, Bach” by Douglas Hofstadter. This is a big book; over 700 pages. And it’s mostly about math. Well, really it’s about “meta-math”: the bigger ideas behind math. But in order to get to the bigger ideas, the reader has to wade thru a lot of stuff about ordinary math, the kind of stuff that you sat thru in high school and freshman year in college, bored out of your skull. Mr. Hofstadter tries to make it as un-boring as possible by telling entertaining stories and presenting little ‘brain-tickler’ puzzles and hosting a fairly wide sample of artistic works by Escher (those crazy drawings that defy the normal rules of dimensionality and gravity). And he wants to convince you that math is the foundation of human consciousness.

I’m only at page 110, but so far I can’t see how a group of conventions regarding sets and axioms and theorems are going to explain why I think there is a ‘me’ inside of me. But that’s just it, Hofstadter would say. Consciousness is all about chasing your tail, about looping around without any starting or ending points. And that’s just what a lot of mathematicians have been thinking about over the past 100 years or so. Well, all this recursive math stuff is pretty interesting, but I’m still not sure that it’s going to bring me any closer to the mystery of subjective mental experience than the various neuroscientists, psychologists and philosophers, whose books about the mind and consciousness line some of my shelves. (Or sit on my floor – I don’t exactly have a nice, neat library here in my dinky apartment).

Hofstadter is enthralled with Bach’s musical works, because of the complex relationships between the various musical patterns that interweave cleverly through many of his compositions. I can’t say that I’m a big classical music fan; and even the Bach that I have heard . . . . well, let’s just say that I’ve thus far failed to appreciate the genius behind it.

The best song that I know of which deftly intermixes a group of wandering musical elements is a guitar instrumental by The Ventures, from their Live in Japan ’65 album. The song in question is a 3 and ½ minute medley of three Ventures hit songs from the early 60’s: Walk, Don’t Run; Perfedia; and Lullaby of the Leaves. It uses the standard 4-man pop tune setup typical of the mid-60’s: drums, lead guitar, rhythm guitar and base, i.e. the same line-up that the Beatles and their imitators made famous. But I’ve never heard a song where each musical element is so distinctive and independent, and yet plays off the other three so well. When listening to Medley, you can easily pick out one instrument and follow it all the way through. Even rhythm guitar, something that you hardly notice on most “fab four” songs, is a distinctive contributor to Medley. Each player gets his moment in the spotlight (even Bob Bogle on bass fills in the weak spots with some fantastic rides). But at just about every point in the record, each player is present, working away. I’m not sure about the math behind the notes on Medley. But my conscious mind tells me that there was some real genius at work in putting it together.

One more thing about the Ventures versus Bach: most classical work is quite complex but rather slow tempoed. Medley moves along at a lively clip. There isn’t much room for error. It’s kind-of like a race car ballet, moving along at 150, everyone hoping that everyone else gets the moves right and doesn’t crash. Maybe that’s not a bad way to think about how our minds work – at least when they work right. Every now and then they go crash, and all the notes in life are off-key. At least three-fifths of my typical work-week goes like that! And not like Godel, Escher, Bach, and The Ventures.

There’s an interesting little technology quirk coming over the hill called “transcranial magnetic stimulation” (TMS). I’ve read a few things about how neuroscientists are using it to study the brain. Basically, it shoots a pulsating electro-magnetic inductance field through your skull and into your gray matter, where it can mess around with the electrical signals flowing through your neurons. That’s the stuff that makes your mind work and forms your consciousness.

TMS has been around for some time now, but with all the brain research going on these days, it has been put to much use lately. Aside from brain function experiments, it is now being tested as a therapy for depression and migraine headaches. And one scientist, Dr. Michael Persinger in Canada, is using it to generate mystical states of consciousness, akin to religious experiences. He’s been rather successful at it. Other scientists think that it unlocks many different types of creative mind abilities.

So, the TMS technique is starting to sound like a drug, something that can have a profound effect on consciousness. And it’s not illegal. And furthermore, it’s not all that high-tech. It lends itself to an electrical handyman’s basement project. In fact, there’s a wiki web site for those interested in do-it-yourself TMS. It’s a bit uncertain what power levels are going to be needed to get results. Most TMS researchers use high-powered electromagnets outputting 1 to 1.5 Tesla of field strength for short bursts. That sort of machine would require at least 120 V power and some heavy capacitors. But Persinger’s research alleges that weak fields, down in the microtesla range, can have noticeable effects. That would be more in the battery or 12V converter range, where nobody could get badly hurt. Let’s hope that the Popular Science crowd and the new age electro-stoners stay away from the industrial equipment. If it can be done outside the lab, it can be abused, and someone’s gonna get hurt.

And there are indications that this technology can hurt as well as heal. If the pulses hit the wrong areas of the brain, there is the possibility of seizures, or interference with autonomic brain stem processes (like breathing and heartbeat). So yes, the military has become interested in TMS. At minimum, the University of South Carolina is working on a device to put in soldiers’ helmets that would counter the effects of exhaustion and sleeplessness. But there might also be negative effects that can be guided towards the enemy, as the technology develops. One can also imagine TMS as a future domestic homicide tool, if they can miniaturize the technology. A disgruntled spouse charges up his or her TMS-stun gun, then while the unfaithful partner is asleep, just a few zaps to the back of the neck, and . . . . no bullets, no poison, no blood, pretty much no evidence.

Well, I’m not in any hurry to fry my brain circuits with the equivalent of a nuclear electro-magnetic pulse (those of you who watch Jericho know what that can do). But then again, I can’t help but wonder if waving a magnet back and forth over the right ear might bring inner peace after all.

Brain / Mind ... Psychology ...

People seem fascinated by what other people fear the most. This is a fairly common theme in psycho-drama, and it’s been picked-up lately by some of the reality TV shows, e.g. “The Fear Factor”.

Our world definitely has a sadistic side to it. There are thousands and thousands of awful things that can happen to a person; sometimes death is involved, and sometimes death is spared, just to prolong the torture. And on top of that, there’s a market for Gothic fiction writers who think of tortures and torments that don’t even exist yet. Low-budget science fiction has taken this into new realms, e.g. people being eaten by huge insects or being turned into huge insects. Yea, the human race definitely has a fetish for the torture and degradation of our fellow man, and a corresponding fear that such fetish will be unleashed on ones’ self.

So where do I stand with this? What torment am I most afraid of? Well, I remember a reading assignment back in college regarding Gothic fiction. I had to slog through some crummy story about old backwoods Europe; I’m not sure if it was written by Poe or Baudelaire or whoever. The author started talking about people who have been accidentally buried alive. Not the landslide kind of burial where a person is covered by a huge wave of dirt or rubble, but the proper funeral kind. I.e., the person who wakes up in a buried coffin.

Under modern conditions, this couldn’t happen. But go back a hundred years or so, before medical science had rigorous ways to determine death, and before the custom of embalming a corpse became universal even in the backwoods, it wasn’t impossible that someone could appear dead and be put in a coffin. They could then theoretically wake up and regain their senses in the dark, claustrophobic silence of that coffin, deep underground. The novelist I was reading claimed that there were various cases in France where a grave digger was putting the last shovelfuls over a coffin after a funeral ceremony, and stopped when he thought he heard muffled cries coming from down below. Those were the lucky ones. The Gothic novelist then kicked it up a notch, telling of instances where coffins had to be disinterred and opened years later, only to reveal that the cloth lining inside the box had been torn to shreds.

Not a pleasant thought. Quite Euro-Gothic.

Anyway, I was reminded of this recently while reading a book about the neurological foundations of human consciousness (The Feeling of What Happens, by Dr. Anthony Damasio). Dr. Damasio was discussing something called “locked-in syndrome”, which I have seen in other books referred to as Guillain-Barre syndrome. It’s actually not that much different from being buried alive. Under “lock-in/G-B”, a person remains conscious, and can still see, hear and feel things. However, they lose just about all control over their body. They can’t move a muscle (with one exception, to be discussed). To doctors and anyone else, they seem to be in a deep coma or a permanent vegetative state. But they are still quite aware of their circumstances. Obviously there is much fear and angst; probably even terror. Your body becomes a coffin, and no body knows you’re in there.

But actually, that’s not 100% true. The only reason we know about this condition is that there usually is one last way for these unfortunate people to communicate with the world. They can still move their eyeballs, just a bit. So you can ask them questions, and they can say yes or no by moving their eyes. That’s if you know enough to look for a meaningful flinch of the eye.

Obviously there have been locked-in people who never got thru to the outside world, and had to live in total isolation for however long their bodies last. And even for those who do manage to get thru, it’s not much of a consolation prize. You’d think that such people would still suffer greatly in terms of angst and depression. And yet, Dr. Damasio says that they probably don’t. He says that somehow, the angst factor in their brains and minds is turned off. They find a kind of inner peace. Zen meditation, without even trying.

Well, I hope never to wake up in a buried coffin, or in a body that’s for all practical purposes dead. But it’s nice to know, at least in the second case, that nature isn’t quite the sadist that human beings are.

I’ve been reading some interesting articles lately by Ed Fredkin and Lee Smolin which imply that reality — matter, energy, and even empty space — is ultimately made up of little boxes. According to these theories, even time is not continuous; it proceeds in spurts. The boxes and spurts are extremely tiny, so we never notice them. Everything seems smooth to us. But at some point of extreme magnification, reality may well become “granular”. We could never directly “see” this granularity. It’s so tiny that even the smallest blips of energy (photons, electrons, gravitons, whatever) are relatively huge. And the only way we see anything is by bouncing these blips of energy off the thing. The little grains of reality are too small to make any difference in the way that photons (light particles) bounce.

Don’t ask what lies within the boxes in space and spurts of time. That is where reality, as far as we are concerned, ends. We can never know if there’s a creamy cupcake filling deep inside all of those little thing-a-ma-jiggies that make up space and time. All we would know is that Picasso and the other Cubist painters ultimately had the right idea.

Smolin is a main-line physicist, extremely bona fide. His work is a rigorous (though yet still unproven) extension of both Einstein’s theories of relativity and quantum theory. Fredkins’ work is deeply rooted in science, but veers off into metaphysics (via the fascinating field of “complexity” and “emergence”, where high-powered mathematics and modern computer science interact). Fredkin has said (more or less) that a digital universe actually looks and acts something like a computer. Some people take him to say that as a computer, the universe is actually computing something. If that were to be true, then perhaps the answer to what life means IS truly blowing in the wind. But Fredkin cuts you off before you can accuse him of believing in God. He won’t go so far as the 18th century theologians who argued that just as a watch requires a watchmaker, an orderly universe requires an intelligent and godly creator.

If you want to continue along the digital reality spectrum into the realm of New Age speculation, the next guy to see after Fredkin would be Australian philosopher David Chalmers. Chalmers hasn’t said too much yet about digital reality, but he has put out a theory of generic consciousness that takes up from Fredkin. Fredkin talks a lot about the fundamental nature of information, and so does Chalmers. Fredkin sets up the picture of a digital universe mediating information on many different levels, from tiny, super-fast micro-events within the atom to huge, billion-year macro events between galaxies. Chalmers equates information with consciousness, and posits that different flavors of consciousness may exist on both tiny and huge scales; the human brain might not have a monopoly on consciousness according to Chalmers.

These other forms of consciousness, if they do exist, would seem very strange to us. But then again, during the last 500 years when cultures from different corners of the globe first laid eyes on each other, the feelings were quite similar (e.g., when European explorers first saw African pigmies, they had a hard time thinking they were really human; it took a lot of reflection to accept that in spite of the many differences, Englishmen and pigmies share all of the salient features of the human race).

Well, in a previous essay I said that I couldn’t dig the Chalmers view. It seemed to me that consciousness is a human brain thing. I’m still not ready to accept Chalmers’ speculation about thermostats having a form of consciousness just because they process information about their environment. But the grand arc that sweeps from the digital nature of Smolins’ “loop quantum gravity” theories (which stand a decent chance of being proved right), through Fredkins’ computerized universe ideas, proceeding across Chalmers’ bridge between information and consciousness, does inspire some huge thoughts. Perhaps the Universe is somehow conscious? And that consciousness is somehow related to our individual human consciousness? And once the techno-theologians jump in to this, does God make a comeback (in spite of Fredkin and Chalmers’ atheism)? Or maybe — are those little unbreakable, unknowable granules of space and time — are they God?

Folks, this could get very, very interesting.

PS, after I wrote this essay, I went out running. In the dark eastern sky I could see beams of light shooting up from lower Manhattan. Yea, it’s been five years since nine-eleven. Definitely a reality check.

Brain / Mind ... Current Affairs ... Society ...

I want to say something here about the Terri Schiavo drama, but with all that’s been said over the past ten days, it’s hard to say anything new. It’s harder still to arrange all of the pieces and angles into a coherent, understandable picture. Nevertheless, for what little it’s worth, I’ve got some random thoughts that I want to share. (Hey, a million other bloggers are having their say, so why not me?)

*** Ms. Schiavo will soon be dead. Or is she already dead? Her parents certainly see her as being alive, but the doctors and judges seem to say that she’s pretty much dead, given that she’s missing the part of the body / brain where consciousness, thinking and feeling are mediated.

*** So, it boils down to the question of what human life is, and how do we know when it is present.

*** The doctors and judges seem to have settled on a definition of human life that is tied to upper brain function. If you have a working upper brain, or a resting upper brain, or even a misfiring upper brain, then you are human and are entitled to basic social protections (like food and water). If your upper brain is gone for good, though, then you’re not legally human. As the headline of an article in the NY Times asks, “Did Descartes Doom Terri Schiavo?“.

*** That explains why Ms. Schiavo was adopted by the religious conservatives as their poster child. The real issue here is ABORTION. If upper brain function defines human life, then most abortions do not involve human life. Around two-thirds or more of abortions take place during the fetus’ first three months, when the developing brain structure doesn’t show any signs of having been “switched on” (no brain wave, as with Ms. Schiavo). However fourth and fifth month abortions are fairly common, and by that time the fetus does exhibit signs of upper brain functioning.

*** So, if the Terri Schiavo case holds, it will have logical consequences for both sides of the abortion dispute. It will put to rest the idea that a human life is at stake during the first trimester. But, it will support the notion that abortion becomes murder immediately thereafter (unless the life of the mother is at stake).

*** As to the medical malpractice settlement . . . yes, I voted for John Edwards, but now I wonder if malpractice lawsuits sometimes go too far. Was an OB/GYN specialist responsible to ferret out Ms. Schiavo’s bad eating (and barfing) habits? And then pay out $1 million for not preventing their consequences? This doesn’t appear to be a case where a patient is harmed solely because they depended upon a medical specialist to interpret complex medical evidence and the doctor messed up. Bulimia may be a lapse of common sense or may be a psychological issue, or may even be a sociological question (see below). But is it primarily an OB/GYN issue? (I don’t have all the facts here; perhaps the doctor in question could and should have done more. But 100% liability doesn’t sound right either). If there is a problem today with judges and the courts, I’d say that it is exhibited here and not with what happened after Ms. Schiavo lost consciousness. (Not that I support Bush’s proposals to limit liability law suits, which are tailored to protect big business).

*** Getting back to Ms. Schiavo, it’s tough to watch someone die, even if they are brain dead. It’s got to be tougher still if you are the parent. I do feel sorry for Mr. & Mrs. Schindler. Even if it is just their imagination, Terri Schiavo is still alive to them, but soon won’t be. Mr. Schindler’s dramatic, rabble-rousing exhortations can thus be forgiven, given that a parent’s love for an injured child is just as automatic as Ms. Schiavo’s continuing eye and facial movements.

*** And the bulimia thing leads us to the late, great Karen Carpenter, who also died of a heart attack brought on by bad eating habits. Yea, it is regrettable that American society places so much pressure on women to be thin while at the same time offers so much incentive to be overweight. We just can’t seem to find the sensible middle. Getting back to Karen, wouldn’t it be ironic if Ms. Schiavo listened to the Carpenters when she was growing up back in the 70s?

Aspergers ... Brain / Mind ...

Not too long ago, I found out about Aspergers Syndrome. I came across some articles in the New York Times (4/29/04 and 5/9/04), and they struck a nerve. Some of the symptoms sounded close to home — especially the feeling that many PWAS’s (“People With Aspergers Syndrome”) have of belonging to another world: the “whoops, wrong planet” syndrome. I’ve definitely toyed with that notion!

Still, the emotional distancing and insensitivity typical of Aspergers didn’t sound like me. I’m generally empathetic, and can usually pick up on other people’s feelings and sympathize with them. At least to the degree that those feelings are expressed through language and sound. I also express my own feelings rather well through audio — I use voice modulation extensively, as opposed to the flat eloqution that typifies many “Aspies”. Really! Also, I’m not a victim of routine, another Aspergers characteristic; OK, I’m not exactly a ‘wild and crazy guy‘, but I can appreciate a new perspective and a different road thru the forest as much as the next guy.

But as to the non-verbal forms of social signal-sending, e.g. body language, eye contact — admittedly, I don’t do very well with those things. And yes, I can be a bit clumsy, which  »  continue reading …

Brain / Mind ... Personal Reflections ...

Sorry to bring up a touchy subject, but the fact is, we all have to die one day. Maybe it’s good sometimes to think a little bit about that. Not many people want to die, but since we can’t get around it, I suspect that most of us would like our passing to be a meaningful, emotional thing (the way you sometimes see it portrayed in the movies). Unfortunately, you’re probably not going to be feeling all that good as you die, and your mind probably won’t be at its peak of concentration. [Although some research shows that the brain has an electrical surge in its final moments, as dying brain cells all shoot off at once; this might cause a final moment of peak consciousness, possibly responsible for some reports of near-death experience.]

It would be nice to have some great insight in your final hours; maybe you’d finally see the meaning of life, or maybe you’d come up with some great message to pass down to young people that would inspire them in their struggle to fulfill the promise of humankind. That would be nice.

Unfortunately, your mind is probably going to be wandering at the time, and if you’ve lived all your life within the American consumer culture, it would be hard for the wandering mind not  »  continue reading …
