On Monday afternoon I was working on another piece of bureaucratic paperwork, and I had to write a date next to a signature. For just a second, I noticed that it was 8-9-10. How ’bout that.
Hmmm, for the next four years we’re going to get sequential dates like that. That seems to me like something to be celebrated. I mean, why is January 1 any more sacred?
But no one else (that I know of) seemed to notice. I didn’t see or hear any comment about it in the paper, radio, internet nor TV. And that’s too bad. Nice little things like ascending date numbers are always overlooked. We all want the big thrills in life, and we live in on-going disappointment about how rare and unpredictable they are. So why not focus on the little things that you can count on?
Hey, 9-10-11 is coming! We all should start thinking now about how to celebrate it, as a part of the on-going celebration of our lives.
Jim, You have a very good point in that we should start looking for the little things
in life that can give us pleasure but are often overlooked. Perhaps the nubmers are
overlooked as a source of beauty because they involve numbers which brings one very close
to math. Yes, math is supposed to be beautiful and elegant, but one has to appreciate and
understand numbers; perhaps a drawback for some. Nevertheless, you bring up an often
overlooked (especially by the ordinary person) area of beauty.
In Chicago (or one of its suburbs), there was a baby born 8-9-10 at 11:12. If these
numbers are good luck, then that baby should have a wonderful ife. (I realize I made a
“jump” from “beauty” to “luck.”)
But if there is an element of “luck” to numbers does it work the other way? What about
the Friday the 13th we have coming up tomorrow? My husband always worried about Friday
when it fell on the 13th; he felt it unlucky. Perhaps people are unlucky if they think
they will be. Then, of course, the converse applies–which brings us to a “good” aspect
of numbers and perhaps back to “beauty.” Perhaps people will be “lucky” if they think they
will be, or then again, maybe if they just look for the beautiful in life which surrounds
us in little ways, as you mention. MCS
